The female driver, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized Friday in critical condition and had undergone 10 hours of surgery, Suffolk County Police Chief Dennis Kane said. He added that none of the youths provided an explanation for the incident.
Kane said the group used a stolen credit card to buy the 20-pound turkey, then one teen threw it out the rear window of their moving car into oncoming traffic last weekend.
The turkey bounced onto the windshield of a car driven by the 44-year-old Lake Ronkonkoma woman, smashing the glass and her face.
The teen accused of throwing the turkey, Ryan Cushing, 18, of Huntington, faces several charges, including assault and reckless endangerment. Four others face lesser charges involving the stolen credit card, officials said.
Charges against the sixth teenager were being determined on Friday, Kane said.
Ronkonkoma is on New York's Long Island, about 50 miles east of New York City.
