LAMPASAS, Texas (AP) -- A single-engine plane crashed in a remote area of central Texas on Saturday, bursting into flames and killing two people, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

The Piper PA-32 crashed at about 6:30 p.m. in western Burnet County, about 35 miles southwest of Waco, after dropping off the radar at an FAA facility in Houston, said John Clabes, FAA spokesman for the southwest region.

The sheriff's department had not identified the victims late Saturday.

Officials believe the aircraft was headed for Lubbock, Clabes said. The FAA's aircraft registry lists a Lubbock resident as the owner of the plane.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were headed to the site to investigate, Clabes said.
