MELISSA, Texas (AP) -- Rescue crews worked early Thursday to free a construction worker trapped in a trench after rock collapsed on him.

The 47-year-old man was working in the 20-foot-deep trench Wednesday afternoon when a large boulder at one end fell in, causing a collapse.

``We've determined that there's only one victim in the trench and that the trench is stone. A large segment of stone has fallen in, and large equipment is needed'' to remove it, said Allen Fire Chief Bill Hawley.

Police dispatchers said early Thursday that crews were still at the rescue site.

Officials said the trapped worker, who has not been identified, was buried under a pile of stone as he worked on a water pipeline for a residential subdivision in Melissa, about 40 miles north of Dallas.
