Cumberland, RI -- Tragedy was averted yesterday when a 4-year-old girl was pulled from a pond after falling through a sheet of ice. An off-duty firefighter is credited with finding the child as she struggled in several feet of water then calling for help on his cell phone.

The child was conscious when the North Cumberland Fire crew arrived around 3 p.m. at the pond near Nate Whipple Highway and Quaker Road, said Chief Rene Gendreau, who declined to identify the girl. She was transported to Hasbro Children
