A two-alarm house fire on the East Side of San Jose left a woman hospitalized with second- and third-degree burns this morning and the roof of a neighboring home damaged.

The fire, at 125 N. 27th St. near East St. John Street, was first reported at 8:11 a.m. by neighbors who noticed the back porch was ablaze. When firefighters arrived at 8:17 a.m., the house was ``fairly involved'' in fire, and they were told a woman was inside the single-story home, said fire Capt. Allison Cabral.

Firefighters then entered the house and pulled the woman out with second- and third degree burns to her hands, arms and face. The name and condition of the woman, who is estimated to be 60 to 70 years old, were not immediately available.

No other injuries were reported in the blaze, which was declared under control at 9:21 a.m. But heavy smoke continued to rise off the roof of a neighboring home after that time. There was no immediate estimate of damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
