A young Sunnyvale boy died this morning when a fire tore through his mobile home, but two adults and two other children under 10 years old survived, officials said.

When firefighters from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety arrived at the home inside the 700-unit Plaza Del Ray Mobile Home Park on Vienna Drive just before 9:30 a.m., the place was already burning furiously, said Capt. Byron Pipkin.

Firefighters went inside to try to rescue the only child who remained inside as the other four occupants escaped, but they were unable to save the boy, who was also under 10.

Pipkin declined to identify the child by name. He said he didn't know why the child didn't make it out with the other occupants.

``We've got a lot of questions and not a lot of answers yet,'' he said. ``We're in the early stage of the investigation.''

The mobile home was all but destroyed, Pipkin said. No other units were affected.
