ELGIN, Ala. (AP) -- Volunteer firefighters responding to a vehicle fire in Elgin discovered the remains of a woman sitting in the driver's seat of the Jeep.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Ronnie Willis declined to release the woman's name Sunday evening, but he said she lived in Elgin and the fire occurred at a lake lot that she and her family owned.
The sheriff did not immediately return a call Monday.
Elgin volunteer firefighters were called to the scene around 11 p.m. Saturday when a neighbor saw the Jeep on fire. Investigators said it was parked on a rural road near Blue Water Creek.
Willis said it is possible the Jeep's muffler system or catalytic converter ignited leaves under it, causing the fire. He said an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
