NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- A 6-year-old boy died and two sisters were seriously injured in a fire that destroyed their home, authorities said Friday.

Firefighters dispatched to the two-story home about 11:30 p.m. Thursday found flames shooting out of every window and door, the city fire department said in a statement.

The boy was trapped on the second floor and perished before firefighters could reach him.

His twin sister received life-threatening injuries and was taken to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk. She was to be transferred to the Shriner's Burn Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

A 12-year-old sister was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital's burn trauma unit, where she was being treated for serious injuries.

Two brothers, 10 and 14, and their parents were unharmed.

Their names were not released pending notification of relatives.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
