MADRID, Spain (AP) -- A nursing-home fire blamed on a smoldering cigarette butt killed one resident Thursday, injured six and prompted a delicate evacuation of nearly 180 more, many of them disabled, authorities said.

The fire broke out before dawn at a facility outside Salamanca in western Spain.

The fatality was a 78-year-old man who was believed to have been smoking a cigarette and failed to extinguish it properly, police said.

Two police involved in the evacuation were also injured.
