SHUBERT, Neb. (AP) -- The State Fire Marshal's Office suspects a candle may have started the fire that killed a 3-year-old girl here on Sunday.

Ray Nance, a spokesman for the State Fire Marshal's Office, said the Shelley Huey and her five children were at home when the fire broke out at about 4:30 p.m. in the southern Nebraska town. Nance said several older children in the house first alerted their mother about the fire and while Shelley Huey was able to help four of her children out of the house, her youngest, Shelbi, was not found until after firefighters arrived.

``The fire grew so quickly,'' Nance said.

Shelbi was found on the home's first floor, Nance said.

Shubert Fire Chief Dick Oliver said the heat and smoke were too harsh for rescuers to get to the child.

``We just couldn't get in there,'' Oliver said.

The four other children were not injured in the fire.

The house, its contents and a minivan that was parked outside were all destroyed in the fire, Nance said.
