Akron firefighters rescued an Oberlin Street woman who was sleeping in a third-floor bedroom while a fire that began in the kitchen was filling her home with smoke Monday morning.

Akron Fire Lt. Albert Bragg Jr. said cooking food was left unattended. The woman, who did not want her name to be released, smelled smoke and called 911, Bragg said. Firefighters estimated damage at $20,000 to the house and $5,000 to the contents.

The woman was treated at the scene by firefighters, Bragg said.

``It really could have been a tragedy with her upstairs sleeping,'' Bragg said.

The door to the woman's room was closed, Bragg said, which kept out most of the smoke and carbon monoxide.

Smoke detectors in the home did not work, Bragg said
