SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- One person died on Thursday when a house exploded in a Whitemarsh Island neighborhood, fire officials said.

The person's identity was not released and the house explosion and fire still is under investigation, said Chief Wesley Meadows of Southside Fire and EMS.

Neighbors reported the house exploded at 11:53 a.m. followed closely by a second explosion. The roof caved in on the house and debris was scattered across the street. Vinyl siding on homes next to the house melted from the fire's heat, Meadows said.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are investigating the fire.
