A Wilmington fire captain has been charged in connection with a fatal motorcycle accident.

Captain Fred Gainey was arrested at the fire headquarters on Market Street Wednesday morning. He is charged with accessory after the fact in a second degree murder.

The charge comes after a fatal accident on Carolina Beach Road in September. Police say a truck turned in front of Ronald Gard who was heading south on his motorcycle near Legion Stadium. Gard broadsided the truck.

Police arrested the driver of the pick-up truck, Charles Grier and charged him with driving while intoxicated. Later they also charged him with second degree murder.

Gainey's arrest warrant says he helped Grier by removing evidence...but no one involved in the investigation will reveal what Gainey took.

Gainey has been a firefighter for 17 years and is a captain at station 7 on college road.
