Two young girls, ages 11 and 12, died after being trapped in an overnight apartment fire in Madison.

The blaze broke out at the Lamplighter Apartments around 10:20 pm Wednesday night. Both the girls' mother and her boyfriend made it out of the apartment safely, along with one of the girls. However, after being told that her sister was still inside the burning building, the child ran back inside to try to save her. Both girls died of severe burns and smoke inhalation.

Fire officials say that the fire appears to have started in a back bedroom on or near a bed. They also believe that there was no electricity in the apartment and that the residents were using candles for lighting. There is also some questions as to whether there were working smoke detectors inside of the apartment at the time of the blaze. The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
