(Edison, NJ -WABC, October 12, 2004) -- A home in Edison, New Jersey was destroyed in an explosion and fire, and the blast and flames did damage to homes on either side of it Tuesday. Authorities were trying to determine if a gas explosion was to blame.
Edison Mayor George Spadoro was on the scene, assessing the damage on Plainfield Avenue.
It happened in a residential area of mostly single family homes. Excavation work was being done on the home at the time, and construction crews were digging near the house.
Because of today's windy weather and the force of the explosion, the blast blew embers onto homes on either side. People living nearby said they were just about blown out of their doorways when they tried to run outside to see what had happened.
Some living about half a mile away said they heard it.
Luckily there were no injuries. There were about six emergency evacuations, but no one was home at the house where the blast actually hit.
Authorities said the blast hit a few minutes after the work crew excavating left to take a break or leave the site for the day.
There are a lot of unanswered questions. Gas company officials were on the scene, and doing a door to door check in the neighborhood.
The cause of the blast is still under investigation.
