GRAMBLING, La. (AP) - A Grambling volunteer firefighter faces charges for allegedly setting fire to a Grambling State University building late Monday night.

The G-S-U Fishery Building did not burn. University Police, however, arrested 20-year-old D'Orasay Zachery, of Grambling. He was booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center on charges of simple arson and criminal mischief.

Zachery joined the Grambling Fire Department about four weeks ago. Campus police received a call from students who say they saw Zachery in a white car trying to start a fire on campus. Officers later found him and the vehicle behind an abandoned home near campus.

Fire Chief Johnny Green identified a gas can as being department property at the scene. According to the arrest report, Zachery smelled of gasoline and three witnesses later identified him after he was brought in for questioning.

An investigation continues.
