Investigators were looking for the person who burned 14 golf carts outside the Century Village clubhouse in Deerfield Beach.

Little did they know it was an 83-year-old woman who tried to stop at an intersection, mistook her gas pedal for the brake, went off the road, hit a tree and slammed into the golf carts, setting them on fire.

Then, with her car damaged, she got out and walked away, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

''The lady got scared and left the scene,'' BSO spokeswoman Liz Calzadilla said.

Florence Goldband, of Deerfield Beach, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, according to a police report of the Monday night accident.

The damage to the golf carts, according to the report: about $42,000.

Investigators went to the scene of the blaze around 8:25 p.m. Monday at 2400 Century Blvd.

Fire-rescue workers extinguished the fires, and reported a lot of golf carts had been destroyed.

Deputies found Goldband's gold 2003 Chevrolet Malibu in a parking lot at the clubhouse.

They had matched it to damaged car parts at the accident scene, including a broken headlight assembly.

Investigators traced the license plate to Goldband's home address.

Goldband -- who declined to discuss the incident with The Herald on Tuesday -- told BSO she was just about to go to the police station to report the crash when the sheriff's deputy came to her home.
