FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Two people were hurt after a Fort Smith fire truck being driven to a maintenance shop lost a hose, which was then struck by a Cadillac.

The pumper truck was being driven to a tire shop when the hose fell off on Interstate 540. About 1,500 feet of hose dropped to the highway.

The hose landed in the path of the Cadillac, which then hit the hose, Fire Department Battalion Chief Terry Bigler said.

Police said the injuries to the driver and passenger of the car were minor.

The hose was resting on top of the truck and was not secured, which is standard practice, Bigler said. Incidents of equipment falling off department vehicles are rare, but ``it has happened in the past,'' he said.

Bigler said he did not know what caused the hose to fall.

``The state police will investigate the accident part of it, because it was on the interstate, and then the fire department, we'll do our own in-house investigation as to the cause,'' he said.
