Baljinderjit Singh, 53, died Sunday morning of smoke-inhalation in her basement. She also had been hit in the head, but those injuries ``were not by themselves fatal,'' Macomb County Medical Examiner Daniel Spitz told the Detroit Free Press.
Her husband, Amrik Singh, 53, died of smoke-inhalation but had no other injuries.
Police, who initially identified Amrik as the wife, and Baljinderjit as the husband, said Amrik was on fire when he walked into the family's kitchen and told the children that he had killed his wife. They tried to put out the fire, but couldn't, and fled as the blaze consumed the house.
Sterling Heights police Lt. Michael Reese said the couple had a history of domestic violence, and that officers had been called to the house in 2002 for a suicide attempt by Amrik Singh, the Detroit News reported.
