KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) -- About 30 residents of a public housing complex on the Big Island were seeking shelter Monday night after a fire caused about $50,000 damage to their building, Hawaii County fire officials said.

Although the blaze was contained to one bedroom in the eight-unit structure, other bedrooms and hallways were damaged by smoke and water, the Hawaii County Fire Department said in a news release.

No injuries were reported at the scene, and residents were sheltered at a nearby apartment complex or a local Red Cross shelter, the fire department said.

The cause of the second-floor fire was being investigated.

The blaze broke out around 9 a.m. at the Lailani Apartment complex. The two-story property is owned by the Housing and Community Development Corporation of Hawaii and managed by Hawaii Affordable Property.
