DALLAS (AP) -- The burned bodies of two people were found Tuesday in a sport utility vehicle about one mile south of downtown Dallas.

The burning SUV turned up in a wooded area, known for drug activity and vehicle theft.

Sgt. Gary Kirkpatrick said the vehicle's gasoline tank may have been shot to accelerate the fire.

Police said the bodies were so badly burned that police could not immediately determine the victims' gender.

A woman who lives near the wooded area came upon the burned-out 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe and called police.

Dallas police also said the two victims may have been shot before the fire was set.

Dental records are expected to be used to try to identify the victims.

Authorities say the SUV is registered to someone in the Brownsville area, but police are not sure if that registration is current.
