FRAZER (AP) -- A quadriplegic man unable to leave his bedroom died in a fire that destroyed a house here, but two other adults and four children escaped, the Valley County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

Lynwood Big Leggins, 36, died in the fire Sunday, Undersheriff Vernon Buerkley said. He said Big Leggins' father tried repeatedly to rescue him and was injured. The father was treated at the Wolf Point hospital and released.

An 11-year-old girl in the house alerted other residents to the fire when she awoke on Sunday morning, Buerkley said. Big Leggins was found dead on the floor near his bedroom door about 1 1/2 hours after the fire was reported, the undersheriff said.

He said he did not know the relationships among the occupants of the house, but all lived there.

The cause of the fire, which also destroyed two vehicles near the house, was under investigation Monday.

The state fire marshal is investigating.
