There are sad days ahead for Happy Dayz fans, after the 1950's-style diner in West San Jose sustained heavy damage Thursday night in a fire.

The San Jose Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from the roof and the interior of the diner at about 10:19 p.m.

The classic-car-themed restaurant, located at 2638 Union Avenue in the Maplewood Plaza at Curtner Avenue, was closed when the fire report came in. Firefighters knocked the fire down at 10:41 and declared it under control 12 minutes later, said fire Capt. Allison Cabral.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Estimated damage to the structure of the 100-by-100-foot restaurant was pegged at $75,000, while damage to the contents was put at $100,000.

One firefighter was treated on the scene for a muscle strain and returned to work.
