Video:Several Firefighters Injured In Queens Building FireSlideshow:Images From The Story
Several firefighters were injured Monday morning after a fast moving fire ripped through a row of buildings in Astoria.
There were a couple of things working with and against firefighters. Many were still on the scene around 6:30 a.m. this morning. There were two ladder companies still hitting the fire from above and on the side it was smoldering.
The crews are trying to keep an eye on any hot spots. It started around 1:30 a.m. this morning when someone noticed flames and literally walked one block to the firehouse and told crews what was happening. Everything began in a ground floor store. It was closed at the time and that is where it appears the fire started at 31st Road and 21st Street.
It spread quickly and jumped to a second-alarm only nine minutes later. The flames raced to the roof and took over apartments above the store and in two adjoining buildings.
Dep. Chief Steven Kubler, FDNY: "It was a large body of fire upon our arrival. It had a good head start on us and the wood-framed buildings were vacant and locked up. The windows were covered with sheeting. So, it took awhile to get access to it."
Everyone in the building was evacuated. Six firefighters were hurt fighting this one but they were only minor injuries but they were brought to the hospital.
Also, with today being the first day of school, I.S. 126 is going to start. However, the entrance is on 21st Street which is closed. There is no word yet on how that will affect the start of classes.
