The day following an industrial fire that resulted in the evacuation of portions of Conyers and shut down Olde Town saw activity slowly return to normal Wednesday as authorities began allowing people to re-enter the city.

The fire at the BioLab warehouse on Rockdale Industrial Boulevard resulted in a toxic gas cloud that drifted over the city and caused the evacuation. BioLab is the manufacturer of pool and spa supplies, and the gas cloud contained chlorine and other chemicals.

Olde Town retained the eerie feel of a ghost town Wednesday morning as government offices and businesses remained closed, but by late afternoon, traffic began to pick up and business in and around the Olde Town area began to open.

The emergency evacuation shelters at J.H. House Elementary School and Heritage High School were closed and people were being returned to their residences.

Cowan Hardware on Green Street opened at 12:30 p.m. and manager John Raines said business was brisk.
