Kentucky Firefighters Have Trouble Fighting House Blaze; Fire Hydrant Miles Away

June 8, 2004
Lexington fire officials say because of the age of the home, and the considerable distance to the fire hydrant, it was very hard for them to put the flames out.
A Lexington family won't be sleeping at home after a fire destroyed everything they own.

Now the Berry family is forced to begin the journey of starting over. It started around 6:30 Monday evening at a house on the Elmhurst Farm, on Winchester Road, near I-75.

Firefighters had trouble battling the blaze because there was no fire hydrant near the home. They called in a second tanker to help.

Fire officials also say because of the age of the home it was hard to get the flames put out.

The Berry family was not home at the time of the fire, but their pet was. The family says she made it out of the blaze safely.

Daniel Berry says they lost everything in the fire and all they can do is start over.
