A fire that broke out yesterday evening in a home on a Lexington horse farm destroyed the house's roof and severely damaged other parts of the building.

No one was home when firefighters received a call at 6:20 p.m. about the fire at 2741 Winchester Road.

Daniel Berry and his family lived in the white brick, green-shuttered home, one of three on Elmhurst Farm. Berry's landlord called him to tell him about the fire.

"All you can do is start over," Berry said. "Everything I own is gone."

Fire and smoke were visible in the front portion of the roof, indicating that the fire started in the attic, said Lexington fire department Battalion Chief Randy Gilliam.

Most of the fire damage was contained to the upstairs and attic areas, though other parts of the house sustained water and smoke damage. Although there was "significant, heavy damage" from the fire, the house was probably not a total loss, Gilliam said.

Seven units responded to the scene, including four engines and two aerial trucks.

Firefighters had to bring water from the closest fire hydrant -- almost a mile away -- at Winchester and Hume Roads.
