A Hanover County volunteer firefighter has been charged with setting fire to a 100-year-old building that was used in the 1950s as a segregation-era school for black children.

Joshua W. Schrum, 20, who worked out of Hanover Fire Station No. 5 at Hanover Courthouse, was charged with burning a public building, a Class 4 felony, said Hanover Fire Marshal Judson Flournoy.
