TUPELO, Miss. (AP) -- Tupelo Fire Chief Michael Burns has resigned effective July 31.
In a letter to Mayor Larry Otis, Burns said he was leaving to expand his ``professional development.''
``Several opportunities came up to do some individual consultations,'' Burns said Monday. ``I always wanted to go back to training and those sort of things.''
Burns will consult with industries about fire safety, helping them to conform to federal regulations, and with private businesses about homeland security issues.
``It's a way to see some new things and do additional things,'' Burns said.
The city will begin the search for a new fire chief soon, Otis said.
Burns came to Tupelo from Pearl, where he was fire chief from 1990 to 1993. Before that, he was at the Mississippi Fire Academy in Rankin County from 1984 until 1990.
