NEW YORK (AP) -- A Brooklyn woman suffered first- and second-degree burns over almost half her body when her gas stove exploded during an apparent suicide attempt, officials said.
No one else was hurt in the explosion, which happened at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday on the second floor of 92 India Street in the Greenpoint section, officials said.
The woman, whose name was not released, was listed in stable condition at New York Weill-Cornell Medical Center.
She apparently sealed off her kitchen, turned on the gas and blew out the pilot lights in her stove, according to Chief Fire Marshal Louis Garcia. But the oven pilot light continued burning, eventually igniting the accumulated gas.
