A light-plane pilot was unhurt Saturday afternoon after being forced to land his plane in the water off of Fisher Island, south of Miami Beach.

The identity of the pilot was not available, but spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, which sent units to the scene, said he was not hospitalized after swimming away from the accident.

The plane was towing an advertising banner along the shoreline around 3:30 p.m. when it encountered mechanical problems. Witnesses said the pilot released the banner and brought the single-engine plane down along the water, jumping out of the plane just before it hit the surface.
