Virginia Rescuers Free Man Pinned Against Bridge Railing

June 19, 2004
Rescuers came to the scene quickly and immediatly called for a helicopter, but that rescue attempt failed.

The storm that pounded the Richmond area Friday night had just let up, when suddenly a wall of water came flooding in, knocking a man from his bike and pinning him up against the railing of a bridge in Bryan Park.

Rescuers came to the scene quickly and immediatly called a State Police helicopter, a rescue attempt that failed. A raft was then launched, and using a pulley system rescuers finally reached the man. He had been in the water for more than an hour, and paramedics say he was turning blue from the cold temperatures.

The victim was taken to VCU Medical Center after the rescue. He's not believed to be seriously injured, just badly shaken up. Rescuers say he was lucky not to have been swept below the bridge.
