FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) -- A former Bountiful firefighter and emergency medical technician has been formally charged with trying to kill two fetuses by poisoning his pregnant girlfriend with blood-thinner pills.
Brandon Weaver, 23, was charged Wednesday with third-degree felony counts of child-abuse homicide and surreptitious administration of a substance.
He was arrested in March after allegedly admitting to police that he had crushed a blood thinner prescription he took from a neighbor and put it inside his girlfriend's peanut butter sandwich.
The 32-year-old unidentified woman said Weaver had fixed her a sandwich March 3, which she said didn't taste right.
She ate only half of it and threw the other half away. After the suspect left her home, she became suspicious and inspected the uneaten sandwich.
Inside it, Davis County Deputy Attorney Steve Major said the woman who was 11 weeks pregnant at the time found a white, powdery substance and chunks of pills.
Neither the woman, nor the twins who have not yet been born, were harmed.
Major said Weaver was apparently reacting to news that the woman was carrying twins and had decided not to seek an abortion.
Weaver, who was fired from part-time jobs at Lakeview Hospital and the Bountiful Fire Department following the incident, will receive a summons to appear in court.
Major said he expects Weaver to plead guilty as charged to the ``pre-negotiated'' counts. Prosecutors have agreed to take no position at sentencing regarding jail versus prison. Weaver potentially faces up to 10 years behind bars.
Defense attorney Greg Skordas said Weaver, who has obtained extensive counseling, has ``admitted culpability, apologized to the victim and is willing to do whatever it takes to make it right.''
