At a time when low staffing numbers have led to the closing of at least one fire company for 24 hours each day over the past two weeks, the Bayonne City Council will vote tonight on an ordinance that could trim the number of fire officials required by the city.

The proposed ordinance is one of two aimed at revising the hiring guidelines for the Police and Fire departments by giving the department heads the freedom to hire fewer employees than current guidelines demand.
