KANESATAKE, Que. (CP) -- The police station in this Mohawk community was damaged by a fire that investigators describe as suspicious, police said Friday.

No one was in the building and no one was injured in the 30-minute blaze that started just after midnight, said Const. Gilles Mitchell, a Quebec provincial police spokesman.

``Most of the damage is inside, we are not talking about total destruction,'' he said. ``The fire was out fairly quickly.''

Policing in the community west of Montreal has been at the heart of a dispute that has simmered for several months.

Earlier this year, a home owned by Grand Chief James Gabriel was set on fire after he brought in aboriginal officers from outside the community to help fight crime. The measure was opposed by some band chiefs and residents.

Gabriel has been living off the reserve since the fire.
