Huge Blaze Erupts At Decatur, Alabama Recycling Plant

May 27, 2004
A huge fire erupted at Containers Recyclables in Decatur. Flames shot from plastic containers stacked near the main building, and emergency crews were concerned about a possible hazmat situation.

Around 1:30 this afternoon, Decatur firefighters were called to Containers Recyclables on Cockrell Avenue. That's just near Moulton Road. Flames shot from plastic containers stacked near the main building. At first, emergency crews were concerned about chemicals in the containers. The fire also spread to a nearby field, and utility poles that run electricity to the business.

The black smoke from the fire could be seen for miles, even from the Huntsville International Airport.

Many showed up at the business, concerned about relatives who work there. However, no one was injured. No nearby homes were damaged. However -- homeowners say they could definitely feel the heat of the fire.

No official word on the cause of the fire at this time. Firefighters are still working a few trouble spots, before they can go inside and start their investigation.
