OXFORD, Conn. (AP) -- One person died after a small airplane crashed into a residential area near Oxford Airport in rain and fog Sunday night, the Oxford Fire Department said.

Severe weather, including strong thunderstorms and one reported tornado near Cromwell, blanketed Connecticut Sunday night. It was not clear if weather played a role in the crash.

The pilot's name was not immediately released. There were no passengers.

The plane landed on Jacks Hill Road shortly after 9 p.m. and crashed into trees in some front yards, a fire department official said. No one on the ground was injured.

Area officials had received a distress call from a plane near Danbury earlier in the evening. It was not known if it was the same aircraft.

Federal authorities were to be called in to investigate.
