ALVA, Okla. (AP) -- Four businesses were destroyed when fire consumed a downtown block in this northwestern Oklahoma community.

Fire Chief Phil Burrow said the fire started at about midnight Friday.

By the time the fire trucks arrived at the scene, 25-foot flames were shooting through the roof of the two-story buildings.

``The strong winds just blew the fire forward,'' Firefighter Allen Schwerdtfeger said.

Firefighters from Alva and surrounding communities fought the blaze for four hours before it was under control, Burrow said.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but believed it may have started in the south end of a lawnmower repair shop.

A sewing center, fabric store, monograming service and a lawnmower repair shop were destroyed by the fire.

Fabrics and More Etc., had celebrated its grand opening at the first of the month.

Other nearby businesses sustained smoke damage.
