Illinois Firefighters Battle Unusual Foe; Thousands Of Bees Swarm Dept. Fire Truck

City firefighters had the prickly task of rescuing themselves and others from a swarm of thousands of bees that settled on a city pumper truck parked on the lot of the restaurant at 1820 Vaughn Road.
WOOD RIVER -- The lunch-hour buzz was about more than food Monday at Tequila Mexican Restaurant.
City firefighters had the prickly task of rescuing themselves and others from a swarm of thousands of bees that settled on a city pumper truck parked on the lot of the restaurant at 1820 Vaughn Road.
The incident began just before noon when fire Capt. Dana Emerick, who was inside the restaurant performing a routine fire prevention check, noticed a large swarm of insects outside.
"It looked like locusts swarming around," Emerick said. "They were all over the parking lot. It looked like rain they were so thick."
He continued with the inspection, thinking that the swarm would be gone by the time he got outside. When he got outside, however, he found the bees parked on the back of the rescue truck.
