A young boy pulled unconscious from his burning home in Milpitas this morning remained in critical condition, as investigators tried to determine what caused the two-alarm fire.
The unidentified boy, described as either three or five years old, suffered major smoke inhalation and was not breathing when fire crews found him upstairs, said Bobby Dixon, assistant chief of the Milpitas Fire Department.
Firefighters were called at 7:55 a.m. to a home in the 1900 block of Everglades Drive where heavy smoke was seen pouring from the second-story.
A relative, who had managed to escape the fire with another child, tried to re-enter the home to save the trapped boy when flames and smoke overwhelmed him, Dixon said.
The fire was under control shortly before 8:15 a.m.
