SOMERVILLE -- Authorities said a torch used to melt roofing tar is to blame for a house fire Sunday night on Vanderveer Avenue. Fire official Barry Van Horn said all four occupants of the home evacuated safely once one of them noticed smoke coming through the walls and the baseboards on the second story. Apparently the fire smoldered for several hours after the roofers left the house for the day.

"Because this was detected early and the fire department was called immediately, the fire was rapidly extinguished and the family is still in the house," Van Horn said.
