A Darnestown family remains homeless after a fire ripped through their single-family home Saturday afternoon.

Fire investigators believe the blaze began because of an electrical malfunction in the home, said Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Pete Piringer.

"They weren't able to determine the exact cause of the fire, due to the extensive damage," he said.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries as crews battled the fire in the 13400 block of Darnestown Road and has been treated and released, Piringer said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and the 911 call was originally received from a neighbor. The fire, which investigators believe burned for a while before being called in, took more than 20 minutes to put out and caused $100,000 of damage.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist the Darnestown family of two.
