SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) -- A small earthquake centered in the Pacific Ocean rattled residents of this beach-front city awake early Sunday but apparently caused no injuries or damage, police said.

The magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck at 1:47 a.m., according to officials with the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Institute of Technology. It was centered 10 miles west of Isla Vista, where the University of California, Santa Barbara, is located.

We have no reports of any damage so far,'' said Terry Staten, a records supervisor with the Santa Barbara Police Department. He said police received a number of calls from concerned residents who said they had been jolted awake.

``It rattled windows and sent the dogs to barking. It certainly woke me up,'' said John Palminteri, senior reporter with Santa Barbara television station KEYT. ``It probably lasted about five or 10 seconds.''
