MIAMI (AP) -- A spotlight technician fell to his death during final preparations for a David Bowie concert Thursday night, prompting the performance to be canceled.

The worker, whose identity was not immediately released, fell about 50 feet from a ladder and landed on the side of the stage at the James L. Knight Center, said Miami Fire-Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll. The worker was pronounced dead at Ryder Trauma Center.

Miami police Sgt. Christine Acuna said there was no sign of criminal activity related to the incident, which was still under investigation.

Stereophonics, the opening act for Bowie's show, had finished their set a few minutes before the incident. The worker was apparently trying to adjust lighting in preparation for Bowie's performance, which drew a sold-out crowd of about 4,600, Carroll said.

A message left at the office of Pamela Fallon, a spokeswoman for tour promoter Clear Channel Entertainment, was not immediately returned.

Bowie's next scheduled tour stop is Saturday in Atlanta.
