Georgia Roof Fire Creates Much Smoke, Little Damage
You may have seen a huge cloud of black smoke filling the skies this afternoon in Savannah. The smoke was coming from a roof fire at a former shopping center off Stiles Avenue. A crew was doing repairs above what is now three churches when a tar kettle tipped over and caught fire.
Firefighters were able to keep all the damage limited to the roof. "Very little actually," said fire department spokesman Matthew Stanley. "From what the guys were saying, they feel they can go up and do the roof repair job themselves. There's no structural damage to the building."
About a dozen workers were on the roof when the fire broke out. No one was injured and firefighters had the smoke and flames under control within 20 minutes.
