A one-alarm fire destroyed the American Legion Post 172 pavilion in Lanham.
County Fire and EMS Spokesman Mark Brady said the fire began April 30 in a shed attached to a kitchen structure and spread to the pavilion in the 7100 block of Cipriano Road.
The pavilion area, Brady said, "was not enclosed. It had a roof with tables and chairs."
Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Chief Brian Rudy and Brady agreed that a house on the property received minor damage to its exterior due to the radiant heat of the burning pavilion.
No one was injured, however the pavilion and kitchen are totally destroyed, Brady said.
Firefighters extinguished flames in approximately 30 minutes. Crews remained on the scene for nearly an hour afterward, ensuring that the blaze was completely out.
Engines from West Lanham, Greenbelt and Branchville responded to the fire along with ladder trucks from Berwyn Heights and College Park. American Legion members had scheduled a pig roast and rummage sale this weekend at the pavilion.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined and the investigation is continuing.
