Jersey City firefighters found a menagerie of animals in a burning building near Lincoln Park yesterday morning, Fire Capt. Andrew Johnson said.

Firefighters rescued 15 cats, three snakes, two dogs and an iguana from the burning two-story, two-family building at Delaware and Communipaw avenues, Johnson said. Firefighters also removed nine dead cats.

While battling the blaze, firefighters flipped a bed over in the second-floor apartment and found the majority of the 15 live cats hiding beneath it, Johnson said. The cats took off in all directions, with some fleeing the building on their own and others eventually rounded up and rescued by firefighters, Johnson said.
