Fire destroyed the 18th century Moreau home of Irving Dean Jr. -- editor with the Daily Gazette.

He told the paper his labrador retriever, Chance, helped the family escape the fire. Irving said the dog barked and pounced on his 18-year-old son to wake him up. The teen then broke a window and jumped from the roof.

Irving woke up when he heard the glass break. He and his wife escaped.

Chance died in the fire, which investigators said was probably caused by faulty wiring in a microwave oven.
