One person was killed Friday when the interior of a building collapsed in Mattoon. Police say a demolition crew was working to take down the Bushue Building on Broadway in downtown Mattoon when the roof caved in on three workers. The cause of the accident is unknown.

One person walked to safety and another was rescued and taken to Sara Bush Lincoln Hospital, but a third didn`t make it out alive. His name is not being released. Demolition of the building was completed early this morning so the building`s wreckage wouldn`t damage other surrounding buildings.

A three-block area around the Bushue Building has been blocked off during the rescue and investigation. Authorities say the building was coming down to make room for a parking lot.
