After Ten Years, New Jersey Firefighters Getting New Firehouse

After almost a decade of requesting a new firehouse, the township's firefighters are now guaranteed to get it.
After almost a decade of requesting a new firehouse, the Greenwich township's firefighters are now guaranteed to get it.

The township committee on Thursday night unanimously approved construction of a $3.24 million firehouse on the 114-acre Hamlen property off Greenwich Street, which is also slated for sports fields and parks.

It's taken some time but I think that it's come out for the best for the future of the township," said Joseph Mecsey III, chief of the Stewartsville Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1.

Fire company officials have been talking about the need for a new facility since the late '80s and approached township officials about it in 1996.
